Private Tutoring by Susan Dorsey

personalized support for children of all abilities

Through 30 years of teaching, I have developed a specialty in tutoring students with learning differences, including dyslexia, learning deficit disorders, and executive functioning issues.

Your child may need a tutor if they are:

  • struggling to keep up in class

  • overwhelmed with their homework assignments

  • feeling stressed about passing an MCAS test

  • challenged by specific areas, such as math problems, reading comprehension or writing

How Can I Help Your Child Succeed?

1. By working at your child’s pace
One of the biggest benefits of having a private tutor is being able to learn at a pace that is right for your child. Sometimes teachers cover material quickly in class and the student may feel uncomfortable asking the teacher to repeat a point. But with a private tutor, lessons can be covered slowly and thoroughly, and the student can have all of their questions answered.

2. By providing one-on-one attention
Often there are too many students in a classroom and not enough time to allow one-on-one learning. This can mean that your child isn’t getting the help that they need to comprehend the material. As a private tutor, I will focus on your child’s specific needs (which will likely change over time) and we can go over a lesson as often as needed until it make sense. Over time, I will get to know your child’s individual learning style and adapt my coaching accordingly.

3. By troubleshooting specific learning obstacles
Often the reason that a student struggles is because they do not understand a certain aspect of the curriculum. This can be anything from essay writing to math equations to having trouble with reading comprehension. As an experienced private tutor, I will help to identify the trouble spots and overcome these obstacles, one step at a time.

4. By focusing on time management and organization
At school, children are taught what is on the curriculum, but not necessarily how to approach their homework and test preparation. I can help your child with study skills, time management, organization of materials and how to prioritize work so as not to get overwhelmed, which are skills that can be transferred into other areas of their life.

5. By working around your schedule and your child’s
Because consistency is important, we will have a designated day and time for our tutoring sessions. However, before an exam period or after missing school days due to illness, we have the flexibility of adding sessions if needed to keep your child on track.

6. By setting goals and objectives
As a private tutor, I can help your child to set goals and objectives, make a plan to reach them, and celebrate the milestones and wins achieved.

Private tutoring can help to:

  • Improve academic performance
  • Create better study habits
  • Encourage self-directed learning
  • Prepare students for high school and beyond
  • Identify learning difficulties
  • Improve confidence and self-esteem

As a tutor, I serve as an effective facilitator between teachers and families in order to lighten the burden on parents and ease the stress of students.
